About Antipoda | Press

Antipoda is a clothing label and art agency providing support to a selected international community of contemporary artists. We provide a platform for both recognized international artists and new artists whose work has been rarely, or never, exhibited. Our online gallery and limited edition fashion range aims to feature original, thought-provoking and intelligent artwork - appealing to a broad yet discerning audience.
Founded in May 2002, in response to the growing contemporary art scene, Antipoda quickly developed into an online art portal, bringing together artistic talent and innovative art forms from around the world into one centralized environment.

The name Antipoda means,
1. Diametrically opposite, used to describe a point at the opposite end of the diameter of a sphere to another point
2. Places at opposite sides of the world from each other.
The name Antipoda was chosen as we felt it encapsulated a sense of global unification, bringing together ‘opposite’ and diverse cultures, styles, thoughts, and expressions within the broad world of contemporary art, from all corners of the world.

Currently, Antipoda is exclusively an online gallery, however our aspiration is to offer art promotion at all levels with the introduction of an offline Antipoda gallery and concept shop, a publishing company and Foundation , extending our support among less fortunate communities, offering specifically designed programs using art as the catalyst for change.
We are all messengers.

What is the concept behind Antipoda Artcomm?
Our beginnings were focused on promoting & supporting both new and established artists world wide. After almost 2 years of feedback and growth, we are looking at a new level which will involve the creation of an Art Agency & art shop, under the new domain, www.antipoda.org
In a near future you'll be able to commission artists working across a variety of media – including fine art, mixed media, illustration, comic, street art, photography, animation and short film – as well as buying original artwork, prints and books.
You have work submitted from Australia, Asia, America and Europe?, How do people come across your site?
· Word of mouth and links from our community members and viewers.
· We also do exclusive live interviews, which are published in several magazines and papers as well as online portals world wide - to support our artists and keep our audience up to date with their progress.
· Through our clothing label.
How many members /submissions have you received since starting up in 2002?
Members over 250, submissions we lost count.
We have a submission criteria to join in as members, basically we require a strong portfolio of works including fine art, mix media, illustration, comic, and street art. We are not looking at having the same styles repeated, so we try to get as different approaches - to different media - as possible.
How many visitors does the site get?
About 10,000 per month from over 30 countries, with the majority of hits from the USA, Australia, Japan & the UK.
What sort of feedback do you get from visitors and members?
We receive all sorts of comments but the feedback that we regard as the most important and positive is the acknowledgement that we actively promote and support our community of artists and contemporary art world wide.
How do you support your community of artists ?
We promote and support our community by publishing exclusive live interviews and organising/ promoting art shows and events world wide.
What are you hoping to achieve at Antipoda?
Antipoda is really about putting artists first, it is a place where you can be inspired and inspire others by making that experience part of your life, whether you love what you see, buy a painting or a book or wearing clothes that mean something to you.
As we grow we would like to organise more exhibitions around the world as well as a series of collectable books featuring our community of artists.
Our future plans include the creation of a concept shop where art and clothes from our community meet.

What do you think about the overall concept of Antipoda
I admire the fact that someone has actually created a space for artists to self-promote themselves and their art. It doesn't host to an elitist art scene. In the art world if you do not have a name for yourself then, sadly, you just don't exist but Antipoda is not about that. The work they feature ranges from well known artists to not-so well artists.
What do you like best about Antipoda
The new version of the site is so much easier to navigate. It is also now features indepth interviews with some it's artists.
Why do you visit the Antipoda web site & what do you get out of it
Sometimes I visit the Antipoda site to view the phenominal range of work from around the world. Other times I'll visit to get an idea of what art shows are opening in my neck of the woods.
Anything else you would like to add
Nothing. Just keep doing what your doing.
